Hawks on the Wing

September 17 @ 4:00 pm - September 19 @ 11:00 am

Acadia National Park in September is filled with migrating birds. It is the best month to see a great variety of species – hawks, falcons, waterbirds, shorebirds, and songbirds  – on the move southward. This workshop dives into the basics of hawk identification. We’ll also look deeper into hawk migration mechanics and timing with a site trip to Cadillac Mountain. It is routine for Schoodic Institute bird ecology staff and citizen scientists to monitor the flights, and this is the perfect opportunity to join the action. We’ll discuss the latest on Merlin and eBird app use, introduce you to HMANA (Hawk Migration Association of North America), and discuss Schoodic Institute’s ongoing studies with Acadia National Park in an effort to adapt to rapid environmental change.

Due to COVID-19 precautions, participants must provide their own ground transportation to and from Schoodic Institute and during all field trips. All field trips will be caravan style.  All participants must wear a facial mask that covers nose and mouth during all tour activities, especially when social distancing is not possible.  Changes to the status of COVID-19 precautions are monitored closely by Schoodic Institute and are subject to the guidance of the Maine CDC (and U.S. CDC).

Participants should bring binoculars. A camera (optional) can be fun as all tours are fairly scenic. Spotting scopes are useful but optional and your guide will provide one for group use, as well as guidebooks. None of the tours require strenuous hiking. Birding will be slow moving and on level ground. There may be some spots that are muddy, uneven, and slippery, but large boots are unnecessary. Boat tours can be cold and damp. Bring appropriate clothing.

Day 1: begins on the Schoodic Institute campus at 3 pm with check-in and orientation at Rockefeller Hall. We’ll then take a leisurely stroll to Schoodic Point before dinner at 6 pm. An evening presentation on hawk identification and migration follows.

Day 2: starts with an optional morning bird walk followed by breakfast. We will then drive to the Cadillac Mountain Hawk Watch site for several hours of instructional, experiential hawkwatching. We’ll return to the institute by 5 for some leisure time before the 6 o’clock dinner.  An evening discussion on the day’s experience follows.

Day 3: starts with an optional sunrise at Sea Watch on Schoodic Point before breakfast.

Breakfast is from 7 to 8. We’ll return to Schoodic Point after breakfast in anticipation of migrating birds, including falcons, moving along the coastline. Checkout is at 10 am, so will wrap things up between 10 and 11 am.
