Rockweed: Foundation species, harvestable resource
October 8 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
Rockweed (Ascophyllum nodosum) is a common Maine intertidal alga. Rockweed offers habitat to invertebrates, fish, and birds and has been harvested commercially in Maine since the 1970s. There are many critical lines of research needed to reconcile the duality of rockweed as a foundation species and a harvestable resource. This talk will be about rockweed, generally, and how Hannah is addressing one of the research questions: “How does architecture of rockweed affect associated species?”
Marine Ecology Director Hannah Webber presents as part of the Shoals Marine Laboratory Seminar Series.
