SUMMARY:Stars Over Schoodic II
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this second offering of ‘Stars Over Schoodic’! \nAs darkness falls over the Schoodic Peninsula\, the Milky Way arches across the sky from horizon to horizon. Late summer’s most prominent constellations are suspended within its pale glow. \nAmateur astronomer Richard Luecke will take you on an indoor\, 50-minute image-enhanced journey along that river of starlight and introduce you to summer’s most prominent constellations. You’ll learn to identify Perseus\, Cassiopeia and Andromeda\, Cygnus the Swan\, and Aquila\, Zeus’s pet eagle. Your journey will end in the constellation Sagittarius\, which marks the heart of the Milky Way Galaxy. It glistens with star clusters and glowing clouds of interstellar gas that even our naked eyes can perceive in the Schoodic’s dark sky. \nWe will meet in Moore Auditorium on Schoodic Institute’s campus from 7:30pm – 8:30pm on Friday\, August 29th. Weather permitting\, we’ll venture outside for a green laser tour (8:30 – 10:00pm)\, where you’ll meet these sky wonders face-to-face – and likely see a few flashing meteors! A large astronomical telescope will provide stunning views of the ET Cluster\, the Great Andromeda Galaxy\, the Dumbbell Nebula and more. Bring binoculars if you have them\, and dress warmer than you’d think necessary!

SUMMARY:Of Asteroids\, Comets\, and Meteors… and Close Encounters II
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this second offering of ‘Of Asteroids\, Comets\, and Meteors… and Close Encounters’! \nThere are more things in our solar system than the eight planets and their moons. Millions of small bodies of rock\, ice and metal – asteroids\, comets and meteors – orbit the Sun. Many are awesome to behold against the dark night sky\, but some are potential threats to our planet. Amateur astronomer Richard Luecke will offer an indoor\, image-enhanced introduction to these celestial neighbors\, how to observe them\, and the risks they pose when their trajectories cross the Earth’s orbit around the sun. \nJoin us in Moore Auditorium on the Schoodic Institute campus from 7:30pm – 8:30pm on Thursday\, August 28th. Weather permitting\, attendees will be invited outdoors for a laser-guided tour of Maine’s stunning night sky and viewing of star clusters\, nebulae and far distant galaxies through a large astronomical telescope (approximately 8:30pm – 10:00pm). Bring binoculars if you have them\, and dress warmer than you’d think necessary. \nSpace is limited! Please register below.\nCost: $15.00/person or $50.00/family of up to four \nNASA Photo / Comet NEOWISE 2019

Ray received a B.A. degree in biology from UC San Diego (1987) and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees (1993\, 1997) in ecology from UC Davis. \nABOUT THE 2024 ACADIA NATIONAL PARK SCIENCE SYMPOSIUM\n\nHosted by Schoodic Institute and the National Park Service\, the Acadia National Park Science Symposium provides a forum to learn about science taking place in the region and to interact and build collaborations with scientists\, educators\, students\, park staff\, and others working in a range of fields. You can learn more about the science symposium here. \nThe theme of this year’s symposium is 25 Years of Impactful Research in Acadia National Park. The symposium will highlight some of the most influential science\, science communication\, and education that has happened in Acadia National Park since the start of the Research Learning Center (RLC) 25 years ago. In 2000\, the National Park Service began working with community members to create an RLC on the campus of the former Navy Base in Winter Harbor. The goal of Schoodic Institute (Acadia’s Research Learning Center) is to help grow science in national parks and better connect science with management\, education\, and communication. Since the establishment of Schoodic Institute\, the amount of annual research in the park has increased more than threefold. This year’s science symposium will highlight some of the most influential examples of research\, education\, and communication that has happened over that time. \nThe symposium will take place in-person at Moore Auditorium on the Schoodic Institute campus (Winter Harbor\, ME) and online via Zoom. This virtual option is open to speakers and attendees alike. Please note that there will be overnight accommodations available. Lunch will be included in registration\, as well as coffee and morning snacks.

SUMMARY:Sea Level Rise Trail Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, September 20th from 12pm-1:30pm at the Bar Harbor Oceanarium and Education Center for a bag lunch and tour of the sea level rise trail during the king tide! \nKing tides are the predicted highest high tide and lowest low tide of the year. They are important because they show us what rising seas will look like on the landscape. On Friday\, September 20th\, just after 12pm noon\, Mount Desert Island will experience a king tide\, and we invite you to explore the Oceanarium with us to learn more. \nMany people have questions about whether the January 2024 storms were an anomaly or a sign of what’s to come. When we hear “one foot of sea level rise”\, what does that look like on our coastline? Join Raney Bench from the Mount Desert Island Historical Society\, Jeff Cummming of the Oceanarium\, Catherine Schmitt of Schoodic Institute\, and artist Jennifer Steen Booher for a talk about sea level rise\, last winter’s storms\, and our future. Learn how to measure and mark predicted high tides in places around the island you care about\, and join us in a conversation about coastal resilience and how we can plan for the future. \nBring a bag lunch and wear sturdy shoes for this short walk through the marsh. \nInterested in learning more? Here are some helpful links: \nCoastlines Project \nGulf of Maine King Tides Project \nNews coverage from Mount Desert Islander \n \n

SUMMARY:Of Asteroids\, Comets\, and Meteors… and Close Encounters II
DESCRIPTION:There are more things in our solar system than the eight planets and their moons. Millions of small bodies of rock\, ice and metal – asteroids\, comets and meteors – orbit the sun. Many are awesome to behold against the dark night sky\, but some are potential threats to our planet. Astronomy volunteer Richard Luecke will offer an image-enhanced introduction to these celestial neighbors\, how to observe them\, and the risks they pose when their trajectories cross the Earth’s orbit around the sun. \nJoin us in Moore Auditorium on the Schoodic Institute campus from 7:30pm – 8:30pm on Saturday\, August 31st. Weather permitting\, attendees will then be invited outdoors for a laser-guided tour of Maine’s stunning night sky and viewing through a large astronomical telescope (approximately 8:30pm – 10:00pm). \nSpace is limited! Please register below.\nCost: $15.00/person or $50.00/family of up to four \nNASA Photo / Comet NEOWISE 2019

SUMMARY:The Unforeseen Wilderness: Nature\, Bookbinding\, and Photography with Eliot Dudik (Registration CLOSED)
DESCRIPTION:Registration has closed for this workshop.\nJoin a small group of folks for a seven-day intensive workshop exploring an unusual confluence of interests: bookbinding\, photography\, and nature walks in one of the most profound places on Earth\, Acadia National Park. Tranquility and focus will be our guide as we lodge and work on the Schoodic Peninsula\, often referred to as the “quiet side” of Acadia\, dividing our time between classroom bookbinding sessions and stepping out into a wonderland of spruce\, granite\, and sea. \nThe workshop is directed by bookmaker\, photographer\, and educator Eliot Dudik\, who directs the photography program at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg\, Virginia. He has spent every summer and winter in Maine for the past nine years working on his own long-form photography projects\, teaching photography and bookbinding workshops\, and exploring the coast of Maine\, especially the dreamscape of Acadia National Park. He has been visualizing this unique workshop for years and is excited to offer it for the first time this summer! \nThe structure of the course: Throughout our week together\, we will meet in our workspace to explore bookbinding basics including methods\, materials\, and book structures. All bookbinding tools and materials will be provided. We will practice four different bindings over the course of the week\, each building on skills learned in the previous lesson. These books will be blank and can be used as journals or sketchbooks. \nThroughout the week\, we will leave the classroom to explore the surrounding national park. Excursions will include morning or afternoon walks\, as well as full day trips to the busier and more popular/populated parts of Acadia on Mount Desert Island. On these nature walks\, we will attempt to take in the famously breathtaking beauty while using cameras and Wendel Berry’s essay: The Unforeseen Wildness to inspire individualized experience. \n \nAt the conclusion of our week together\, we will each create a short edit and sequence of photographs made in Acadia and produce small books of the work. These books might also incorporate additional media\, including drawings\, collage\, writing\, etc. The photographs can be made with cell phones or more sophisticated digital cameras. Participants will bring their own cameras and ideally a laptop with Adobe Photoshop installed. \nThe lodging and meal plan complete this unique and immersive experience\, allowing us to disconnect from our everyday lives and truly experience something special. This workshop is intentionally limited to a small group of participants to enhance the individualized experience; don’t delay signing up as this workshop will fill quickly! \nFor any questions regarding the workshop\, please contact Eliot directly at eliot@eliotdudik.com. \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Birds of Spring: Anticipation and Appreciation
DESCRIPTION:The seasonal shift of birds from wintering areas to summer breeding territories is well underway during the month of April.  This 4-part mini-course taught by Seth Benz is offered as a sequential program combining classroom presentations with a field excursion each week.  April\, at our latitude\, is a month of anticipation for returning birds. It is also a time of exodus for species that have spent their winter with us.  By early May some bird species have begun nesting\, others are establishing territories\, and still others are migrating through our neighborhoods.  We’ll immerse ourselves in the bird world for 3 hours each week using slides\, videos\, museum specimens\, select readings and field observations.  While each week is designed to build upon the previous week’s experience\, course content will be accessible enough that each week alone will be a learning experience.  Join the flock\, get in on the joy of anticipating and appreciating Acadia’s bird life.

SUMMARY:Intertidal Research in Acadia
DESCRIPTION:Schoodic Institute and Acadia National Park invite you to a virtual session of the Acadia National Park Science Symposium on intertidal research in the park. Four sessions with a panel of invited speakers will discuss National Park Service priorities\, broad scale research across the intertidal zone\, research specific to the rocky intertidal\, and research specific to the soft sediment intertidal. There will be a question and answer discussion at the conclusion of each session. \nThe intertidal zone of Acadia National Park has attracted researchers for over a century. In 2021 alone Acadia National Park issued 21 research permits for people to collect and share data about Acadia’s intertidal zone. In the summer of 2021 a summer intern scoured park resources to compile 7\,781 unique observations of algae\, invertebrates\, fish\, and other intertidal organisms—observations spanning from 1903 to 2018. The intertidal of Acadia National Park is perhaps the park’s most threatened ecosystem\, facing a hash of discordant stresses. How can science help the park manage for the threats\, while the park also acts as a place for researchers to better understand the very role and nature of the intertidal? During this symposium we will hear from researchers and managers dedicated to the twin goals of “Science for Parks” and “Parks for Science”–we hope you can join us. \nVenue – The event will be held virtually via Zoom.\nAgenda – View the draft agenda.\nDeadlines for registration – Registration for the symposium will close at 5 p.m.\, Tuesday\, March 1.\nQuestions – For more information\, contact Shannon O’Brien at sobrien@schoodicinstitute.org \nLoading…
