Angi King Johnston\, lead volunteer for the Cadillac Mountain Hawk Watch\, will make connections from past to present\, describing trends observed over the last thirty years of watching the skies from the highest mountain on the East Coast. \nAbout Dr. Bonnie Newsom\, Angi King Johnson\, and Olivia Olson\nDr. Bonnie Newsom is a citizen of the Penobscot Nation and an archaeologist interested in the pre-contact lifeways of Maine’s Native peoples. Through her research\, Dr. Newsom seeks to humanize past peoples by exploring concepts of identity and human agency. Her current research centers on community-engaged archaeologies\, aboriginal ceramic technologies\, and Maine’s shell bearing coastal sites. Dr. Newsom’s professional history includes serving as the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for the Penobscot Indian Nation and as Assistant Director for UMaine’s Wabanaki Center. She has a strong public service record which includes serving as Chair of the Repatriation Review Committee for the National Museum of Natural History\, a member of the Maine Indian Tribal-State Commission\, and a Trustee for the University of Maine System. She currently serves as a commissioner for the Maine State Museum and is a board member for the Forest Society of Maine. Dr. Newsom holds a B.A. in Anthropology and an M.S. in Quaternary Studies from the University of Maine and she earned her Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. \nAngi King Johnston is an interpretive naturalist and raptor specialist with almost three decades of experience studying\, documenting\, and communicating the dynamics of hawk migration across Acadia National Park and the greater Gulf of Maine region. As a longtime participant and leader of Acadia’s Cadillac Mountain Hawk Watch she manages up to 10 volunteers and mentors interns and park service rangers annually while collecting\, analyzing\, and presenting migration data to thousands of visitors each season. Her work includes identifying and counting individuals of multiple raptor species\, including hourly documentation of environmental factors and entering all findings into the national Hawkcount.org database through Hawk Watch Association. Angi’s expertise blends scientific rigor with compelling public interpretation. She passionately shares with visitors and colleagues of all ages the natural history of raptors and conservation efforts; a hallmark of her approach to connecting people emotionally and intellectually with raptor ecology\, Acadia National Park and beyond. Across her career—as a National Park Service ranger\, research associate\, and naturalist—Angi has become known for making complex migration science accessible\, inspiring stewardship\, and fostering a deeper understanding of the ecological forces shaping raptor movement through the Northeast. When not counting raptors\, Angi spends her summers as a whale watching naturalist and visiting her favorite birding spots in Acadia National Park. \nOlivia Olson M.S. is an interdisciplinary researcher and science communicator working at the intersection of archaeology\, ecology\, and climate studies. The most common ecosystem across the park\, forests support a diversity of wildlife\, protect lakes and streams\, and clean the air. These forests are special for many reasons. \nLocated in a transition zone between warm temperate forest and cool boreal forest\, between mountains and the sea\, Acadia’s trees support a unique assemblage of plants\, animals\, lichen\, and moss. For 20 years she has led forest health monitoring for 21 parks from Maine to Virginia\, along with freshwater wetland monitoring in Acadia National Park. Her MS and PhD are from the University of Maine and BS is from Northland College. She is a founding member of the Resilient Forest Initiative\, a regional NPS initiative to increase capacity for forest management in eastern national parks. \nAllen Workman is the author of Schoodic Point: History on the Edge of Acadia National Park. Schoodic Institute is ideally situated just a stone’s throw from Schoodic Point\, a migration through-point that tallies tens of thousands of passing birds annually. Lodging is in cozy cabins where you will be awakened by birdsong – Hermit Thrush\, Winter Wren\, and Magnolia Warbler. Blue-headed vireos and Northern Parula warblers often serenade you as you walk to Schooner Commons\, the Institute’s dining hall. Featured field trips include a boat cruise to see Atlantic Puffin\, a visit to the east coast’s largest blueberry barrens where Upland Sandpiper\, Vesper Sparrow\, and Northern Harrier nest\, and a visit to the Somes-Meynell Wildlife Sanctuary with chances of seeing a Common Loon chick or two. \nRegistration is required. The program cost is $1\,395 per participant. Space is limited so register quickly! \nDay 1: Check-in is at 3pm. “Acadia’s Puffins\, Peregrines\, and Loon”s begins on the Schoodic Institute campus at 4:30pm with introductions and orientation. This late afternoon will feature the start of field birding. A reception will precede dinner. Dinner is from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. An evening presentation on puffin restoration will prepare us for tomorrow’s special boat trip to an active seabird colony. \nDay 2: An optional morning bird walk on campus – think warblers – before breakfast! Breakfast is served from 7:00am to 8:00am in Schooner Commons. We’ll then pack for a day afield and travel 40 minutes or so to the boat launch in Steuben for a 2-hour cruise to Petit Manan Island. This is our best chance to see Atlantic Puffin\, Razorbill\, Common Murre\, and several tern species as we circumnavigate the island\, one of just 5 islands in Maine inhabited by Atlantic Puffin thanks to restoration efforts. Seals and other wildlife are also possible. After lunch at a bird-rich picnic spot\, we’ll visit nearby blueberry barrens to look for an assortment of birds\, including Upland Sandpiper\, Vesper Sparrow\, and American Kestrel. In this talk\, Dr. Reich will share how much of our hope in this realm involves finding and supporting the synergies between biodiversity\, climate mitigation\, social justice\, and economic vitality. In forests\, grasslands\, croplands\, and the waters that surround them. But now\, we somehow must do all this while defending and promoting science\, and working to save democracy. \nHow we can do that? We aren’t sure\, but try we must. And perhaps we can learn from the lessons of ecology and evolution about the broader challenges facing society today? Mimicking natural ecosystems\, complex systems science suggests that the amplification of social diversity—such as the expansion of free speech\, viewpoint diversity\, and dissenting opinions—should enhance a system’s capacity to adapt to new challenges. This could occur because ameliorating suppression increases the information available for decision-making (akin to an increase of functional diversity) and creates more flexible structures (analogous to an increase of structural diversity)\, jointly enhancing a system’s ability to handle unexpected shocks. Perhaps one could even interpret this as suggesting that ‘good’ will always win in the end? This strand of Peter’s work is at step 1 of a 1\,000 mile journey. \nCome join Peter as he conveys his sorrow\, shares what is known about our interactions with nature\, offer hope\, and redirects his own scientific journey by tacking more firmly against the headwinds of the day. \nABOUT DR. PETER REICH\nDr. Peter Reich is Director of the Institute for Global Change Biology and Filibert Roth Professor\, University of Michigan; Distinguished McKnight and Regents Professor\, University of Minnesota; and Distinguished Professor International\, Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment\, Western Sydney University. The most common ecosystem across the park\, forests support a diversity of wildlife\, protect lakes and streams\, and clean the air. These forests are special for many reasons. Located in a transition zone between warm temperate forest and cool boreal forest\, between mountains and the sea\, Acadia’s trees support a unique assemblage of plants\, animals\, lichen\, and moss. Under Wabanaki care for millennia\, trees inspired action that resulted in conservation of what became Acadia National Park. The tour is based out of Schoodic Institute\, a research and learning center\, ideally situated just a stone’s throw from Schoodic Point\, a migration passage that tallies tens of thousands of birds annually. Lodging is in cozy cabins where you will be awakened by the birdsong.  Listen for Swainson’s Thrush\, Blue-headed Vireo and Northern Parula to serenade your walk to the Institute’s dining hall. Maine has a way of spoiling birders – and Schoodic Institute’s Spring Birds of Acadia tour is designed to do just that! \nRegistration is required. The program cost is $1\,385 per participant. Space is limited so register quickly! \nDay 1: Check-in is at 3 pm. “Spring Birds” begins on the Schoodic Institute campus at 4:30 pm with introductions and orientation. The late afternoon will feature the start of field birding and a reception before dinner. Dinner is from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. An evening presentation on puffin restoration efforts provides preparation for tomorrow’s special boat trip to an active seabird colony. \nDay 2: Begins with an optional morning bird walk on campus before breakfast – think warblers! Breakfast is served from 7:00am to 8:00am in Schooner Commons. We’ll then head off campus for a day afield.  First\, traveling 40 minutes or so to the boat launch in Steuben for a 2-hour cruise to Petit Manan Island. This is our best chance to see Atlantic Puffin\, Razorbill\, Common Murre\, and several tern species as we idle at the island\, one of just 5 islands in Maine inhabited by Atlantic Puffin\, thanks to historic restoration efforts. Seals and other wildlife are also possible. We’ll enjoy a field lunch at a picturesque community garden and bird-rich picnic spot\, then travel to nearby blueberry barrens to look for an assortment of birds\, including Upland Sandpiper\, Vesper Sparrow\, and Northern Harrier. We may stop for other birds we spot along the way. The after-dinner evening discussion will revolve around this day’s experience\, and we’ll look at how to use eBird\, Merlin\, and how to develop one’s birdwatching toolkit. \nDay 3: Optional campus bird walk before breakfast. Afterward\, we’ll spend the day investigating hotspots on the Schoodic side of Acadia National Park as well as other Downeast locations. We’ll return to campus by 5:00 pm for leisure time before our 6:00 pm dinner. Dinner this last night is your choice of lobster or a delicious alternative. Following dinner\, we’ll review the day and complete a checklist review.  \nDay 4: Starts with another optional before-breakfast bird walk. After breakfast\, we’ll exercise the option of a culminating stroll to Schoodic Point or a short hike to a lookout along the Sundew Trail. But here in Acadia it shines brightly on clear\, moonless nights. The collective glow of its 200+ billion stars arches from horizon to horizon throughout the summer. \nAmateur astronomy Richard Luecke will explain our current understanding of the Milky Way\, our place in it\, and how you can view and appreciate its splendors. His image-enhanced\, indoor presentation will acquaint you with some of our galaxy’s most stunning features. \nWe will meet in Moore Auditorium on Schoodic Institute’s campus from 7:30pm – 8:30pm on Tuesday\, August 26th. Weather permitting\, attendees will be invited outdoors for a laser-guided tour of Maine’s stunning night sky and viewing of star clusters\, nebulae and far distant galaxies through a large astronomical telescope (8:30 – 10:00pm).
