Dr. Peter Reich DESCRIPTION:Join us in person at Schoodic Institute or online via Zoom on Tuesday\, June 23 at 7:00pm for Hope on a Changing Planet: Science\, Democracy\, Nature\, and Us\, our Summer Lecture Series opening event featuring Dr. Peter Reich\, University of Michigan’s Director of the Institute for Global Change Biology and most cited ecologist worldwide! \nRegister Here\nIn the past\, it was enough of a challenge being a global change scientist trying to learn what we humans are doing to the planet’s climate and natural systems\, and how we might use such information to support nature and better manage ecosystems for multiple purposes we humans care about. In this talk\, Dr. Reich will share how much of our hope in this realm involves finding and supporting the synergies between biodiversity\, climate mitigation\, social justice\, and economic vitality. In forests\, grasslands\, croplands\, and the waters that surround them. But now\, we somehow must do all this while defending and promoting science\, and working to save democracy. \nHow we can do that? We aren’t sure\, but try we must. And perhaps we can learn from the lessons of ecology and evolution about the broader challenges facing society today? Mimicking natural ecosystems\, complex systems science suggests that the amplification of social diversity—such as the expansion of free speech\, viewpoint diversity\, and dissenting opinions—should enhance a system’s capacity to adapt to new challenges. This could occur because ameliorating suppression increases the information available for decision-making (akin to an increase of functional diversity) and creates more flexible structures (analogous to an increase of structural diversity)\, jointly enhancing a system’s ability to handle unexpected shocks. Perhaps one could even interpret this as suggesting that ‘good’ will always win in the end? This strand of Peter’s work is at step 1 of a 1\,000 mile journey. \nCome join Peter as he conveys his sorrow\, shares what is known about our interactions with nature\, offer hope\, and redirects his own scientific journey by tacking more firmly against the headwinds of the day. \nABOUT DR. PETER REICH\nDr. Peter Reich is Director of the Institute for Global Change Biology and Filibert Roth Professor\, University of Michigan; Distinguished McKnight and Regents Professor\, University of Minnesota; and Distinguished Professor International\, Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment\, Western Sydney University. He conducts global change research on plants\, soils\, and ecosystems. His work links fundamental physiology with community dynamics and ecosystem structure and function\, from the cell to the globe\, to better understand impacts of multiple global environmental challenges. This includes studying the effects on ecosystems of rising CO2\, climate change and biodiversity loss. He uses long-term experiments\, observations\, big data and models in diverse ecosystems and at a range of scales. The most common ecosystem across the park\, forests support a diversity of wildlife\, protect lakes and streams\, and clean the air. These forests are special for many reasons. Located in a transition zone between warm temperate forest and cool boreal forest\, between mountains and the sea\, Acadia’s trees support a unique assemblage of plants\, animals\, lichen\, and moss. Under Wabanaki care for millennia\, trees inspired action that resulted in conservation of what became Acadia National Park. Today\, Acadia hosts some of the oldest and healthiest woodlands in the Eastern United States\, but their future is uncertain. The tour is based out of Schoodic Institute\, a research and learning center\, ideally situated just a stone’s throw from Schoodic Point\, a migration passage that tallies tens of thousands of birds annually. Lodging is in cozy cabins where you will be awakened by the birdsong.  Listen for Swainson’s Thrush\, Blue-headed Vireo and Northern Parula to serenade your walk to the Institute’s dining hall. Maine has a way of spoiling birders – and Schoodic Institute’s Spring Birds of Acadia tour is designed to do just that! \nRegistration is required. The program cost is $1\,385 per participant. Space is limited so register quickly! \nDay 1: Check-in is at 3 pm. “Spring Birds” begins on the Schoodic Institute campus at 4:30 pm with introductions and orientation. The late afternoon will feature the start of field birding and a reception before dinner. Dinner is from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. An evening presentation on puffin restoration efforts provides preparation for tomorrow’s special boat trip to an active seabird colony. \nDay 2: Begins with an optional morning bird walk on campus before breakfast – think warblers! Breakfast is served from 7:00am to 8:00am in Schooner Commons. We’ll then head off campus for a day afield.  First\, traveling 40 minutes or so to the boat launch in Steuben for a 2-hour cruise to Petit Manan Island. This is our best chance to see Atlantic Puffin\, Razorbill\, Common Murre\, and several tern species as we idle at the island\, one of just 5 islands in Maine inhabited by Atlantic Puffin\, thanks to historic restoration efforts. Seals and other wildlife are also possible. We’ll enjoy a field lunch at a picturesque community garden and bird-rich picnic spot\, then travel to nearby blueberry barrens to look for an assortment of birds\, including Upland Sandpiper\, Vesper Sparrow\, and Northern Harrier. We may stop for other birds we spot along the way. The after-dinner evening discussion will revolve around this day’s experience\, and we’ll look at how to use eBird\, Merlin\, and how to develop one’s birdwatching toolkit. \nDay 3: Optional campus bird walk before breakfast. Afterward\, we’ll spend the day investigating hotspots on the Schoodic side of Acadia National Park as well as other Downeast locations. We’ll return to campus by 5:00 pm for leisure time before our 6:00 pm dinner. Dinner this last night is your choice of lobster or a delicious alternative. Following dinner\, we’ll review the day and complete a checklist review.  \nDay 4: Starts with another optional before-breakfast bird walk. After breakfast\, we’ll exercise the option of a culminating stroll to Schoodic Point or a short hike to a lookout along the Sundew Trail. A 1993 underwater discovery of oyster shells\, dating back 9\,000 years\, supports evidence of ancient coastal living when sea levels were lower. Today\, while warming waters are enabling the return of oysters\, rising waters and storms threaten the integrity of cultural heritage sites. Preserving shell mounds and the Wabanaki knowledge they hold offers vital lessons for sustainable living in a changing world. \nJoin Bonnie Newsom and Catherine Schmitt as they journey through thousands of years of dynamic coastal transformation and enduring human presence. Through the lens of ancient shell mounds\, they will explore the sophisticated foodways\, seasonal movements\, and environmental stewardship of Wabanaki people\, past and present. She is an Associate Professor of Anthropology and Faculty Associate in the Climate Change Institute at the University of Maine. She and her husband Les are both military veterans\, and they live in Eddington\, Maine. They have four children and three grandsons.  \nCatherine Schmitt is a science communication specialist with Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park\, and previously served as a science writer and communications director for Maine Sea Grant at the University of Maine.
