SUMMARY:2026 Wilderness First Aid by SOLO II
DESCRIPTION:Register now for this second offering!\nAccidents happen. People get hurt\, sick\, or lost. The temperature drops\, the wind picks up\, and it starts to rain. Would you know what to do? Many backcountry emergencies are preventable\, and even when bad things happen\, sometimes the wrong care can make things worse. By learning a few basic skills\, you can make the difference between a good outcome and a bad one – and maybe even save a life. \nWilderness First Aid is the perfect course for the outdoor enthusiast or trip leader who wants a basic level of first aid training for short trips with family\, friends\, and outdoor groups. It also meets ACA guidelines. \nInstructor Gerry Brache will teach the 16-hour-long course (spanning two days)\, which will focus on the basic skills of: Response and Assessment\, Musculoskeletal Injuries\, Environmental Emergencies\, Survival Skills\, Soft Tissue Injuries\, and Medical Emergencies. The course will be held on Schoodic Institute’s campus in Wright Hall (classroom 110)\, from 8:00am – 5:00pm each day (Saturday\, June 6th and Sunday\, June 7th)\, with a 30-minute lunch break. A bagged lunch is included in the cost of registration and will be provided both days. This course will have indoor and outdoor sessions throughout both days\, and students should be prepared for various types of weather. Please dress accordingly; we recommend rain gear and warm layers. Energy snacks and a water bottle are also encouraged. \nAn optional CPR Training and Certification course will be available for an additional fee ($50) and will be held at the end of class on June 7th from approximately 5:00pm – 7:30pm. \nRegistration for this course is $250 (lunch included). \nShould You Need to Cancel Your Event Registration\nThere is a $35 processing fee for any cancellation made 15 days or more prior to the conference date. No refunds will be given for cancellations within 14 days of the conference date. \nInterested in saving on your commute? Check out our overnight accommodations on campus! SUMMARY:Hope on a Changing Planet: Science\, Democracy\, Nature\, and Us feat. Dr. Peter Reich
DESCRIPTION:Join us in person at Schoodic Institute or online via Zoom on Tuesday\, June 23 at 7:00pm for Hope on a Changing Planet: Science\, Democracy\, Nature\, and Us\, our Summer Lecture Series opening event featuring Dr. Peter Reich\, University of Michigan’s Director of the Institute for Global Change Biology and most cited ecologist worldwide! \nRegister Here\nIn the past\, it was enough of a challenge being a global change scientist trying to learn what we humans are doing to the planet’s climate and natural systems\, and how we might use such information to support nature and better manage ecosystems for multiple purposes we humans care about. In this talk\, Dr. Reich will share how much of our hope in this realm involves finding and supporting the synergies between biodiversity\, climate mitigation\, social justice\, and economic vitality. In forests\, grasslands\, croplands\, and the waters that surround them. But now\, we somehow must do all this while defending and promoting science\, and working to save democracy. \nHow we can do that? We aren’t sure\, but try we must. And perhaps we can learn from the lessons of ecology and evolution about the broader challenges facing society today? Mimicking natural ecosystems\, complex systems science suggests that the amplification of social diversity—such as the expansion of free speech\, viewpoint diversity\, and dissenting opinions—should enhance a system’s capacity to adapt to new challenges. This could occur because ameliorating suppression increases the information available for decision-making (akin to an increase of functional diversity) and creates more flexible structures (analogous to an increase of structural diversity)\, jointly enhancing a system’s ability to handle unexpected shocks. Perhaps one could even interpret this as suggesting that ‘good’ will always win in the end? This strand of Peter’s work is at step 1 of a 1\,000 mile journey. \nCome join Peter as he conveys his sorrow\, shares what is known about our interactions with nature\, offer hope\, and redirects his own scientific journey by tacking more firmly against the headwinds of the day. \nABOUT DR. PETER REICH\nDr. Peter Reich is Director of the Institute for Global Change Biology and Filibert Roth Professor\, University of Michigan; Distinguished McKnight and Regents Professor\, University of Minnesota; and Distinguished Professor International\, Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment\, Western Sydney University. He conducts global change research on plants\, soils\, and ecosystems. His work links fundamental physiology with community dynamics and ecosystem structure and function\, from the cell to the globe\, to better understand impacts of multiple global environmental challenges. This includes studying the effects on ecosystems of rising CO2\, climate change and biodiversity loss. He uses long-term experiments\, observations\, big data and models in diverse ecosystems and at a range of scales. Reich helped pioneer the development of trait-based ecology and is active in building grass-roots scientific networks. He also helped launch the science education channel\, MinuteEarth (>750 million views). At present he is engaged in trying to learn how we can help society manage itself and its interactions with nature to sustain people and the planet. \nSchoodic Institute’s 2026 Summer Lecture Series events are free\, thanks to support from our generous sponsor\, Bar Harbor Bank & Trust. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Insect Safari: Exploring the Wondrous World of Everyday Bugs feat. Margie Patlak
DESCRIPTION:Join award-winning nature writer Margie Patlak as she takes you on a wonder-filled insect safari of common bugs that you can find wherever there are green spaces. With her closeup photographs\, she’ll showcase the beauty of everyday bugs and talk about their surprising capabilities\, including using tools\, farming\, doing math\, recognizing themselves in mirrors\, and navigating by starlight. \nShe’ll also give you tips on how to find insects\, and help you overcome any fears you might have of them. Her presentation will be followed by a short talk about the iNaturalist app that you can use to identify any bugs you see. You don’t need to travel the globe to find extraordinary creatures because they’re hiding in plain sight in your own backyard! \nMargie Patlak is a science and nature writer\, memoirist\, and photographer. Her memoir More Than Meets the Eye: Exploring Nature and Loss on the Coast of Maine was published by Down East Books/Rowman and Littlefield and given an “Outstanding Book” award by the American Society of Journalists and Authors in 2022.  Her photo book Wild and Wondrous: Nature’s Artistry on the Coast of Maine was also published by Down East Books/Rowman and Littlefield in July of 2023. Her most recent book Insect Safari: Exploring the Wondrous World of Everyday Bugs will be published by Workman/Hachette in June of 2026. \nRegister Here
