Schoodic Spruce Citizen Science Project

For people, children are the future; for forests, seedlings are the future.

Understanding how seedlings fare today provides insights into how future forests may look. Are red spruce seedlings able to grow and survive under current conditions? The Schoodic Spruce Citizen Science Project is seeking partners to track tree seedlings over time, measuring their growth and survival.

We don’t know the exact future climate nor how adaptable species are to the conditions of the future, but we can grow trees across a range of current conditions that may approximate the future climate and thus build evidence for how our tree species will fare under the changes already underway. This project is engaging people living across the region, and thus under different current climates, to help us understand the tolerances of red spruce.
