Shannon O’Brien

Shannon works with our full-time staff and early-career professionals to organize the field season, coordinate citizen science programs, and provide field and lab support. She works to ensure everyone who joins Schoodic Institute’s team of scientists, educators, and science communicators is prepared to tackle a variety of projects in Acadia and beyond and feels supported as a growing professional while doing so.

Shannon’s favorite part of working at Schoodic Institute is the opportunity to work with a spectrum of science roles, from emerging college students and graduates to full-time staff and partners who are experts in their fields. Initially joining the Institute as an Ecology Technician, Shannon knows firsthand the hard work and dedication required to make scientific research possible, as well as the joy of working outdoors. Since transitioning to the coordinator role, Shannon has worked across Schoodic Institute departments to strengthen the organization’s approach to hiring seasonal staff and organizing science outreach efforts, and has worked with the coolest teams to do so.

Born and raised in the south, Shannon has enjoyed acclimating to the Northeast’s terrain, species, and seasonality. For now, she has settled in Maine and enjoys exploring the outdoors, visiting small towns, cackling with friends at local events, and relaxing in the evenings while watching Maine hockey with her four cats.

Shannon attended the University of Maine at Orono (UMO) and graduated in 2020 with a Bachelor’s in Ecology and Environmental Sciences. She first visited Schoodic Institute with UMO in 2019 for a field ecology class.
