As President & CEO, Nick works for the great staff members, board of directors, volunteers, partners, and supporters at Schoodic Institute. As a forward-looking non-profit leader, Nick focuses on mission, strategic partnerships, and financial sustainability. His role includes establishing scientific research programs, fundraising, and developing opportunities for learners of all ages to engage in creating a brighter future for parks, people, and the planet.
Nick has a professional background in climate change adaptation, forest ecology, and resource management at multiple U.S. National Parks. Prior to coming to Schoodic, Nick worked for the National Park Service Climate Change Response Program, helping managers at parks across the country understand ongoing and future climate change. At Shenandoah National Park, he helped establish a network of forest health monitoring plots and held the record for the most tick bites in one summer. He fought wildfires and encouraged prescribed burns at Lassen Volcanic National Park in California.
He earned a Bachelor of Science at the University of Michigan and PhD at the University of Minnesota. For his PhD research, Nick chased tree seedlings all over northern forests to assess the impacts of climate change. He followed this with a Fulbright Fellowship at the University of Göttingen, Germany.
Living in coastal Maine, Nick can be found in the winters looking for elusive snow on which to ski, or trying to build the biggest snowman with his daughter and wife.
