Painting Workshop with Philip Frey
September 9 @ 8:00 am - September 13 @ 5:00 pm
Plein-Air Painting with Philip Frey
With the Schoodic peninsula landscape as our focus, artist Philip Frey will present pivotal lessons designed specifically to develop your creativity. Over time and through joyful effort, we can become a skilled painter, but our creativity can become stale and our images rote if we get stuck. So, to maintain our creativity, we need to look freshly and break down what we see into its abstract elements. We will achieve this through lessons on color theory, the elements and principles of design, as well as daily one-on-one instruction and group critique. Students will learn to open the doors to authenticity and grow as an artist. Be prepared to be challenged artistically, develop insights, and have fun while enjoying the Maine coast.
As this will be an intensive workshop, experience in plein air painting and good drawing skills at the intermediate or advanced level are required. Students should be able to participate in moderate walking on uneven ground with your painting gear (think rocks, roots on Acadia trails). Come prepared for unpredictable Maine weather (wind, sun, bugs and rain). In the case of rain, we will paint indoors or under cover outside. Our days will start early painting on site, with a mid-day break, afternoon lessons and some evening activities. Philip will be painting in oil but has experience with acrylic, watercolor and dry media. Bring your medium of choice. Supply list and reading materials will be sent upon registration.

“I have taken several of your workshops and initially thought that they would be redundant but I was wrong. Your different approaches to plein air, figure drawing and still life kept each fresh and challenging. I enjoyed each one and learned new concepts as well as reviewing old ones.” – M. Beaulieu of Bernard, Maine.
“Phil Frey is not only an inspiringly dynamic artist and but a patient and insightful teacher. His workshop transformed the way I look at the world and how I now approach the ever daunting blank canvas….which is now with confident intention! Having access to and learning from an artist of his caliber is truly a gift.” – Queennette Santiago of Petaluma, CA.
